Chapter Two

On Wednesday, Trin was ready for the busy work. She came in with a smile on her face and her earbuds in her purse. She decided she would put one bud in an ear, leaving the other open to hear anyone call for her. She would be able to get her work done to a little music to help alleviate the tedium.

No boxes or stacks of paper waited for Trin on the desk. As Trin set her purse down, Mary peered out of her office.

“Trin, I need to see you please.”

Trin walked over to Mary’s office, feeling a little nervous. When she glanced back at the secretaries, none of them looked too happy.

Was I not supposed to help them with so many tasks? It never occurred to Trin that she might be hurting them by taking on the extra workload they had to handle. If they were not working according to expectations, however, Trin supposed that could be a problem.

Trin stepped into the office and sat down in one of the chairs. Mary finished typing at her computer and gave Trin a smile.

“You’ve really impressed everyone,” Mary said. Trin relaxed. She and the secretaries were not in trouble then. “Everyone has had nothing but praise for you so far this week, and your ability to stay on task is good.”

“Thank you,” Trin said. “I was afraid I was doing too much to help.”

Mary shook her head. “No, and no one out there is happy with me right now, but they’ll get over it. I’m going to bring in a temp to assist. I hadn’’t realized just how overloaded everyone was without Julie here.” Mary paused. “That’s the woman whose desk you’’re at.”

“The one on maternity leave,” Trin said.

Mary nodded. “Yes. Now, I’m going to be taking you down to meet Cody Roberts and his assistant Lacy Miller. Cody is one of our shipping managers. He deals with our Asian clients primarily, which matches up with your own goals, so I think you’’ll learn a lot working with him. He keeps Lacy busy with meetings and preparing for seminars, so you’ll still be doing busy work, but both of them know to show you actual business stuff as well.”

Trin smiled broadly, feeling excited about her internship again. “Thank you so much.”

Mary stood, and Trin followed. “Thank you. We’ve had mixed results with interns in the past, and before I teamed you with a manager, I wanted to be sure you would be up to the work.”

Mary led her out of the office and down the hall, through the lobby with the brightly smiling receptionist, and into another hall. They stopped at a corner office, where Mary knocked on the door before opening it.

An older woman in her mid-fifties looked up from a stack of papers on her cluttered desk. She had deep black hair, smooth brown skin, and a rounded face. Trin saw a second desk in the wide office that was clean and neat. She assumed that would be her desk.
